Underground Storage Tanks

Chemtech-Ford Laboratories has helped develop methods and analytical requirements for federal and state Underground Storage Tank (UST) programs. Our experience with various UST requirements can help ensure that our client’s samples are collected, analyzed and reported correctly. Importantly, we can save you time and money by eliminating re-runs and minimizing sample volumes needed for analysis.

Analytical Expertise

Our senior analysts have helped write the book on UST testing. For the State of Utah, for example, we helped to clarify and standardize the state-required UST methods including:

  • TPH – Total petroleum hydrocarbons
    • GRO (gasoline range organics) fraction
    • DRO (diesel range organics) fraction
  • BTEXN – Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, naphthalene
  • MTBE – Methyl-tertiary-butyl ether
  • O&G – Oil and Grease
  • TRPH – Total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons
  • HVOCs – Halogenated volatile organic compounds
  • Ethylene glycol
  • PAH – Polycyclic (or polynuclear) aromatic hydrocarbons

Smaller Sample Volumes

Micro extractions are our expertise. Hate filling up several large one-liter containers for a single sample. With our vast UST experience and using state-of-the-art equipment, Chemtech-Ford Laboratories can handle your UST samples with as little as four 40 mL containers. We will still meet your required detection limits. We know our equipment and how to maximize its use to meet your data quality objectives.

Rush Turnaround

Same day rush needed? No problem. Think you need a mobile lab to get quick turn-around-times? If your project is within 75 miles of our lab, we can often get you your results faster than a mobile lab at a better cost. Because we use GCMS for MBTEXN/GRO, we can perform up to 7 samples per hour. We can also do about that many DRO samples per hour. Mobile labs can generally only do 15 analyses per day and generally do not use GCMS leading to false positives.

Silica Gel Treatment (SGT)

Are you concerned that DRO is not from a petroleum source? Many of our customer’s request SGT on all of their DRO samples. SGT removes the fats and plant products leaving only the petroleum hydrocarbons to be reported as DRO. Using SGT can be the difference between being below or above a regulatory limit. We perform extensive QC on all of our SGT analyses.

UST Reporting

Many regulators require a table with results reported in a specific format and style. Just ask and we can automatically provide this format with every work order. We can also perform almost any other type of deliverable you may need.
