Fecal Coliform in Sludge

Coliform bacteria are used as an indicator of the extent of pollution in water and - therefore - of sanitary quality. The coliform group contains many kinds of bacteria, including those naturally occurring in common soil. Although many groups of coliform bacteria are non-hazardous to human health, their presence in a drinking water sample generally indicates that contamination has occurred in some way.

Fecal coliform, which are a sub-set of coliform bacteria, occur naturally only in the gut of warm-blooded animals. E. coli is a well-known fecal coliform. A water sample which tests positive for fecal coliform or E. coli is an indication that the sample has come in contact with fecal matter. This is a serious health hazard, and such water should not be used for ingestion until disinfection has taken place. A water sample that is positive for total coliform but negative for fecal coliform may not necessarily be a hazard to human health; however, it indicates that some contamination does exist and that conditions are such that fecal coliform could grow.

Heterotrophic plate count is used to determine how many total aerobic bacteria will grow on a standard nutrient agar. These bacteria may not necessarily be hazardous to human health, but they indicate the overall bacterial quality of a particular water system.
